I got into technology many moons ago. I learned on a DOS originally; at school we had Apples, which I used; I was part of a pilot program for SASI before it hit the market; and then my home-built computer crashed with all my work on it. My choice was to either rewrite the entire manuscript, pay someone an awful lot of money to retrieve it, or learn to rebuild it myself. I did the latter and have been into tech stuff since. I’ve rebuilt at least 5 computers; do service calls to repair other people’s computers; and do some teaching of various programs/software.
I got into web design because the school I was teaching at required all teachers to maintain a current website. I’m a quick learner so I moved way past the IT department’s support quickly and was told by the principal to stop asking so many questions, that I knew enough. At that point she suggested I take a few classes.
I went back to school for 2-3 semesters and earned by Web Design Certification. The rest of what I know (or at least what I think I know) has been through self-education, reading tech books and manuals, and every other periodical, magazine, book, article, website I can get my hands on.
For the most part, I was really only doing stuff for my school site and the other teachers’ who had tech-challenges (usually for a subway sandwich or diet coke, or what-have-you). Skeeter finally told me I couldn’t do other peoples’ sites anymore without pay. This is how Maui Tech Girl was born. It is under the umbrella of K & S Resources, a consulting company we have had for almost ten years now.
The Maui Girl part of the name was given to me in Utah (2006) by the Washington folks; I just added the Tech part in. So, to answer the most asked question, I’m self-taught for the most part; talented…that’s in the eye of the beholden, but I am great at “stealing” stuff; and just really enjoy seeing sites come alive!
It is a true hobby for me, which gives me a lot of pleasure~that whole immediate satisfaction thing
